September 11, 2007* – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. introduced the world’s slimmest monochrome laser and multi-function printers at the IFA 2007 consumer electronics show in Berlin on August 30. The ML-1630 monochrome laser and SCX-4500 multi-function laser both feature a glossy, "grand piano" finish, and the ML-1630 measures only a slim 4.3 inches (11 cm) thick. Soft-touch sensors replace buttons and a blue-lit control panel adds to the printers’ futuristic quality.

Both the ML-1630 and SCX-4500 can print letter-sized documents at 17 pages per minute (ppm). The ML-1630 is capable of a greater, 1200 x 600-dpi print resolution than the SCX-4500’s 600 x 600-dpi resolution. Toner cartridge yield averages 2,000 pages.

In keeping with the slim design, both printers feature only a 100-sheet paper cassette, so this is a printer for home or very small offices. Just a USB connection limits it to single computer usage. However, the 8-megabytes of RAM will allow for plenty of job queuing.

The SCX-4500 multi-function laser printer features print, scan, and copy functions. Copy speeds are close to print speeds, at 16 ppm with 15 seconds for first page out from the unit’s sleep mode. Users can scan at up to 600 x 2,400-dpi resolution (with 4,800 x 4,800-dpi enhanced resolution).

But Samsung is banking on the design being the real draw for these printers. According to Jang-jae Lee, Senior Vice President of Samsung’s Digital Printing Division, "Samsung now takes the printer to an entirely new level of artistic refinement, above the technology and functional competition… Samsung will distinguish its new printers as luxurious icons of the global market by targeting individual consumers."
