19th Aug 09 - Canon announced a new compact Selphy printer this morning that talks to the user. The ES40 is a $150 photo printer that includes a 3.-5 inch screen and a voice guidance system that talks the user through the process of printing photos.

The Selphy ES40 is a compact photo printer that measures just 8.9 by 8.9 by 5.4 inches and includes a carrying handle. It can produce prints at up to 4 x 6 inches, and Canon claims that it can produce a print in around 55 seconds. It prints using a dye sublimation printing system, which requires special ink and paper. Canon sells packs that contain both the ink and the paper, costing about $20 for 50 prints for a per print cost of about 40 cents. Canon also claims that the prints can last up to 100 years.

The ES40 can also use special gold and silver ink cartridges for adding gold and silver borders or clip art elements to prints.

Support is offered for printing directly from SD Cards, CF cards and  MemoryStick cards. Pictbridge is also supported for direct printing from cameras that support it, and an optional $50 Bluetooth adapter allows for printing from cell phones and other Bluetooth devices that support the appropriate profiles.

The Seply ES40 has an estiamted street price of $149.99 and is available now.
