12th May 09 - Epson today announced the WorkForce 310, a low-cost all-in-one printer, fax and scanner for small and home offices that includes an Ethernet connection so it can be used by multiple users. The WorkForce 310 will be available in June with an estimated street price of $130, and includes inkjet printer, scanner, copier and fax features.

The device itself measures about 18 by 19 by 11 inches and includes both USB and Ethernet connections, so it can be connected to either a single computer or to a small office network. Drivers for Windows Vista, XP and Mac OS are included that allow users to use print and scan from the device across the network. However, faxing features are supported on Windows machines only. Epson claims that the WorkForce 310 is twice as fast as comparable models.

The printer of the WorkForce 310 is an inkjet model, with a maximum black and white printing resolution of 5760 by 1440 dots per inch, with 5 separate ink cartridges: two black, cyan, magenta and yellow. Epson claims that it can manage an impressive maximum print speed of 36 pages per minute (ppm) for black prints and 20 ppm for color pints. In the highest quality mode (which they describe as Laser Quality), this falls to 16 ppm for black and 5.5ppm for color prints. The main paper tray can hold 100 sheets of plain paper, and there is an additional single sheet paper feed for printing onto photo paper or envelopes.

The scanner has a maximum optical resolution of 1200 dots per inch (dpi), which can be interpolated up to 9600 dpi by the scanning software. A 30-sheet document feeder is built into the lid of the printer, and double-sided copying and scanning is supported. Epson claims that the scanner and printer combination can copy at speeds of up to 36 ppm.

The Fax features of the WorkForce 310 include color fax support, a 180-page memory and support for faxing from any computer on the network that runs Windows. Mac users can scan and print, but not fax from the desktop.

The WorkForce 310 will be available in June with a list price of $129.99.
