*11 June 2008* - For the laptop-toting traveling gypsy, Xerox has introduced a free downloadable print driver called Mobile Express Driver (X-MED). Compatible with both Xerox and non-Xerox Postscript printers, the print driver allows users to find printers on their connected network and print documents over a local network or over the internet. Mobile Express Driver is currently only compatible with Windows XP and Windows Vista, and only works with Postscript printers.
Once users have downloaded Mobile Express Driver and are connected into a network, the driver allows users to search for Postscript printers on the same network. Xerox claims not only will the driver save each printer chosen by the user in the users "My Printers" folder, but it will also configure each printers’ features. For example, if the printer is capable of duplex printing or scanning. Xerox claims this driver will keep track of what printer is capable of performing those double-sided, black-and-white only prints, and so on. Perhaps the most useful aspect is the ability to scroll through found printers and check the status of printers before picking one to print from, so you can find which printer is less busy if you need an urgent print.
At the moment, the driver only runs under Windows XP or Windows Vista. And, because it only works with Postscript printers, it won't work with most low-end devices, which use their own proprietary methods of communicating with the printers. The X-MED driver is available as a free download from Xerox.
